Richard and Jane farm 132 hectares at Hillside Farm 6 miles from Melton Mowbray.
The land is heavy boulder clay which grows good grass but makes it difficult for the arable crops in wet times. The farm rises from the village to 500ft above sea level and catches cold easterly winds.
The farm is mainly an arable farm growing winter wheat, winter oilseed rape and spring beans(if the weather ever improves!) The 30 hectares of grass supports 60+ beef cattle and our Charollais flock.
The Grimston flock was founded in 1989 with one ewe bought to provide rams for our commercial flock of North Country Mules. One thing led to another and soon we had a pedigree flock of Charollais ewes.
We had already become MV accredited and began producing rams not only for ourselves but to sell.
In 1995 we joined the Sire Reference Scheme and have firmly believed that this was the way forward to improve the breed by increasing growth and muscle and reducing fat.
The Grimston flock has steadily achieved this for the last ten years. See Sheep Figures for year on year improvements.
Because of our commercial farming experience the flock is run on a commercial basis and our main aim has always been to produce high performance rams for local sheep producers.
Recently we have been quietly reducing ewe numbers retaining high index, well muscled ewes within the flock.
We now have 41 ewes and shearlings with 6 offered for sale this year at Bakewell on 25th October 2008.
